Perry has the father of actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback) Her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. The actress did not go on to consider a career in acting until she reached the age of adulthood due to her parents being worried about the detrimental consequences stress can cause. Perry says she didn't want to be an actor in high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity during her time at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry moved to New York, where she landed small roles in series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Homesickness then caused Perry home to California and theater roles were available. The Other Place was performed by her and her mom on Broadway in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. In the year 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family. Her father played her on her role on the ABC show Scandal. In addition, she played her younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon - a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. The role was selected through an audition, even though she had a close relationship with the show.
